lead magnets

There are four reasons to use lead magnets. In the beginning, we use them to make contact with a potential customer. Another thing is giving away free stuff to establish a bond with users. The third reason is e-mail address gathering and the last, but the most important one: we do it to turn our website visitors into customers in the long run.

Writing some posts in social media alone won’t guarantee the success of your offer. Of course, a great deal can seriously increase the rate of interested users (and result in clicks maybe), but if you’re looking for a long-lasting base of leads, you should act more widely (not to be confused with wildly).

Targeting ads on Facebook or implementing a pop-up window on a website are steps in the right direction, but if they come with a valuable gift for visitors - then they can make miracles happen. Of course, freebies shouldn’t be unconditional. Without an e-mail address, it’s useless. Consider using confirmation links to avoid fake ones.

Give to get

Giving away free stuff can sound foolish, of course, but it can also get you leads that might evolve into loyal customers (if treated well).

This is the most important reason why the freebie has to be helpful and present some value. In many cases, it will be the first impression your brand makes on users - make it a memorable one.

What kinds of lead magnets fit your business?

A lead magnet shouldn’t be chosen randomly. It should have something to do with your brand - relevance is the key to get truly interested leads. Remember that numbers won’t buy your product.

Focus on getting quality leads, not to build a base containing thousands of useless e-mails owned by people who won’t buy a thing from your stock, simply because they’re not interested in a product, but in free stuff.

If you’re selling video games, think about giving away some gaming-related gifts, of course in digital form (wallpapers, a soundtrack from the game or a detailed guide), which is really easy to distribute.

As a personal trainer, you could send monthly diet plans or workout technique videos every once in a while to those, who show interest in your work. If you own a spa, you could offer perfume samples or free massage sessions for newcomers, and so on.

Lead magnets examples

The best way to learn something is to see how it’s done and then… try it yourself. Let’s take a look at some lead generation examples:

1. Checklist

(get it here!)

A simple document containing a list of things to remember - in this case, it’s about the lead collection, so you may find it useful in your work. A checklist may help you keep track of your current process - a quick peek and you won’t overlook anything! It’s a simple concept, but creating one can be a hell of a job!

2. E-book

An ebook full of useful information can be a great way to catch someone’s attention. Just make sure that the inside of the book is as great as its cover and title. The worst thing that could happen is the user who gives you their email address, downloads an ebook and then walks away disappointed.

Put some effort into preparations - make your e-book work for mobile devices as well as for desktops. Take care of its graphic design and choose a software to fold it all into one document.

Express tips:

3. Infographic

Infographics are a great way to present data in an entertaining and accessible way. Infographics connect visuals and information, and they do it effectively. They can increase your web traffic by 12%. It’s because we aquire information best when they are visual (650% more engaging than plain text). More useful data on Lucidpress.

4. Sample

If you’re selling a physical product that can be sampled, don’t hesitate - make some samples and give it away. It may seem risky, but in fact it’s risk-lowering! A sample can work in two ways: people may eagerly buy your product, or - quite the contrary - they may find no interest in it.

Both situations are good for you, because they result in something very valuable - answers.

Express tips:

5. Contest

Again: people love free stuff, and they love to win, too. Combine these two and organize a contest. The more attractive the prize, the better. If you plan to give away a .pdf with printable… think again. Nobody will go for it. But take a look at this:

Free t-shirt for (almost) no effort? Sounds fun… unlike laundry.. Note that Qwertees - a brand that seemed to be just one of t-shirt companies, started this contest to achieve a milestone of 100,000 likes on their facebook page. They’re well over 400,000 at time of writing. Now that’s what we call a good lead magnet.

6. Industry Report

Usually, an industry report answers the question: “What’s going on in a brand?”. It also contains a bunch of useful statistics, including sales from specific periods of time (years, quarters, months), a comparison between a product/brand and their direct competition, as well as future predictions.

An industry report is a very specific, professional and hard-to-create lead magnet. No wonder that it’s not easy to get it, too:

7. Online Course

An online course on a popular matter can be a great way to encourage people to leave you their leads. Customer Support isn’t your best side? Take a course, maybe you’d improve your work with customers:

8. Educational Video

It’s a great way to show people how to do something with your product or service. A “how to” video won’t work as a paid thing, but it’s great as a freebie. And if you’re ready for some how-to-ception, watch this:

9. Free trial

There is no better way to show an app’s functionality than letting people use it. That was the case with Spotify. Everybody knows how painful using the free version can be. Numerous ads, difficulties on the mobile version and much more. But you can try Premium for 30 days to see what’s in there for you.

10. Template

A free website, landing page or mailing template is a great way to get some leads. In this case, we’ve decided to share a free template for a Black Friday-themed landing page for all visitors to our Facebook fan page.

Express tips:

Go get those leads!

Using lead magnets is just a step on getting loyal customers path, but an important one.

Think about what would’ve encouraged you to check out your company’s services, if you were a visitor. You can also try to reach out for feedback from actual passing-byers.

Short poll in exchange for extended free trial or few gadgets? Worth checking out! It could be a great way to start with lead magnets.

Before you go, keep those few things in mind:

I hope those lead magnets will help you get on the right track. Use them as an inspiration and create your own to get more leads. Remember to check the express tips I gave you and use your newly-gathered information well, keeping in mind that leads aren’t the target, but customers are.
